Classification of Hotels on the Basis of Customer

The hotel meets the needs of its guests. Every individual or group of people who maintain a hotel has different needs. Some prefer luxury accommodation, while others prefer to stay in a simple and inexpensive room. Some need facilities such as meeting rooms, business centers and conference rooms if their travel is business-oriented.

Being a capital-intensive industry, differences in guest requirements discourage hotels from catering to all types of travelers. As a result, hotels prefer to create a niche for themselves by meeting the needs of certain guest segments. The hotel can be divided into the following categories according to its customers:

Business or Commercial Hotel
Commercial hotels designed to appeal to business travelers are often located in the city centre. These hotels offer high-speed internet access, business centers and conference rooms, as well as high-standard rooms and amenities. They also offer in-house secretarial services as well as letter writing, typewriter, fax and document photocopying facilities for the convenience of their guests.

Guest amenities at the commercial hotel may include free newspapers, morning coffee, cable television and access to channeled music and movies.

The length of stay of the guest in these hotels is usually very short. The occupancy level is higher on weekdays and slightly lower on weekends. These hotels are also known as city hotels.

Temporary Hotel
Temporary hotels meet the needs of people who are on the move and want to take a break during their journey. Located near ports of entry such as ports, airports and main train stations, these hotels are normally preferred by temporary travelers.

They have an operational room service and coffee shop around the clock and offer all the amenities of a commercial hotel. Temporary hotels are usually five-star, and their target markets include business customers, airline passengers with overnight trips or canceled flights, and airline staff.

Because rooms can be sold more than once on a given day, occupancy is often very high, sometimes over 100 percent.

Suite Hotel
Suite Hotels offer the highest level of personalized service to their guests. Guest rooms usually consist of a living area, a compact kitchenette with a fridge and microwave, a bedroom with an en suite bathroom, and sometimes even a dance floor.

Facilities are highly customized and may include in-room locker facilities. These hotels are patronized by wealthy people and luxury tourists.

As the name suggests, residence hotels provide longer stays. These hotels are usually patronized by people who come on a temporary official delegation to a city that does not have their own residence. The guest stays for at least one month and up to two years.

The services offered by these hotels are modest. Room configuration is generally similar to that of suite hotels. Guest rooms usually include a living room, bathroom, and kitchenette. They look like small individual circle.

These hotels are fully operational restaurants or dining rooms for resident guests and can provide services such as daily housekeeping, telephone, front desk and uniformed services. The guest may choose to contract some or all of the services provided by the aparthotel. The hotel signs a rental agreement with the guest and the rent is paid monthly or quarterly .

Bed and Breakfast Hotel
A European concept, bed and breakfast (B&B) hotels are accommodation establishments that are usually run in large family residences. These range from a few bedroom houses converted into overnight facilities to small commercial buildings of twenty to thirty rooms. The owner usually lives on the property and is responsible for serving breakfast to guests.

Guests are entertained in their bedrooms and breakfast is served in the room or sometimes in the dining room. Bathrooms can be attached to guest rooms or shared. It is suitable for budget travelers as the tariff at these resorts is often lower than at a full-service hotel.

Casino hotels provide gambling facilities, such as the Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. These hotels attract customers by promoting gambling, putting on extravagant floor shows, and some may provide charter flight services to their customers. It has state-of-the-art gambling facilities, especially restaurant, bars, 24-hour room service, well-appointed and furnished rooms for its guests.

Today, these hotels also attract the MICE (meeting, promotion, conference and exhibition) segment. The Las Vegas casinos of the USA are among the most famous casinos in the world.

Conference Centers
The word conference means 'a meeting, sometimes lasting several days', in which persons of common interest participate in discussions or listen to lectures for knowledge gained. Therefore, a conference center is a business meeting the needs of a conference delegation.

These hotels provide rooms for conference delegates; conference hall with desired seating arrangement for meetings; the need for food and drink during and after the conference; and other requirements such as flipchart, signage whiteboard, overhead projector, television, VCR/VCD/DVD player, slide projector, LCD projector with screen, computer and public address system.

These are large hotels with over 400 guest rooms. The services provided are of the highest standard. Normally conferences are priced as packages that include accommodation and meeting facilities.

Congress Hotels
Convention is defined as 'a formal assembly or meeting of members, representatives or delegates of a group for general agreement or acceptance on certain practices or positions'. This type of meeting involves a large number of participants. The hotel that meets the needs of this segment is known as congress hotels.

These hotels can have more than 2,000 rooms to accommodate large numbers of delegates. It is equipped with state-of-the-art convention centers with all the necessary amenities such as seating configuration, audio-visual equipment and public address systems to meet the demands of a convention.
